Alexander Melamid first solo exhibition at Phillips de Pury

Russian painter and conceptual artist Alexander Melamid is to have a solo exhibition of thirty paintings on view and for sale at Phillips de Pury & Company in London. Including the now renowned series of life-size portraits of hip-hop stars such as Snoop Dogg and 50 Cent, the paintings then shift from ‘fame’ to the ‘mundane’, with a further group of works from 2006 - 2010 that have so far remained unseen, including portraits of priests and rabbis, Russian oligarchs, sculptures of ancient Roman figures, animals and stones.

Flying Fish with Bubbles by Sokari Douglas Camp for auction

Flying Fish was part of the work made for the solo show ‘ Play and Display- Steel Masquerades from Top to Toe ‘ at the Museum of Mankind . The idea of the exhibition was to bring a mask collection to life.In museums masks on poles had none of the magic of a mask on a performer. I studied and filmed a teenage masquerade troupe from my home town and collected some masks for the British Museum which are on show in the Salisbury Gallery.
