Florence in the first half of the 20th century became a gathering place for European and American intellectuals and collectors who focused on humanist thought and forming collections reflecting the newly fashionable taste for Italian old master sculpture and painting.
This taste was cultured by the American art historian Bernard Berenson (1865-1959) and driven by a few leading art dealers who dominated the art market with their skill for making extraordinary discoveries and placing them in the collections to which they were best suited.
